In 2010, the UAE state treasury lost US $ 273 million due to corruption

According to Dr. Harib Saeed Al Amimi, President of SAI, the institute has begun litigation aimed at returning illegally misappropriated funds. Over the past two years, public prosecutors have been informed of ten cases of corruption and bribery in the hundreds of millions of dirhams.

Together with the UAE Cabinet of Ministers, SAI employees have begun the process of returning the misappropriated funds that we return to the state treasury, ”said Dr. Al Amimi. “In addition, our institute launched a special hotline on the website, using which the general public could report cases of fraud and bribery within the government known to it.”

This action is carried out in accordance with the government’s intention to raise standards of financial responsibility and transparency at the federal level. Report Fraud, available on the SAI website (www.saiuae.gov.ae), is also available to federal government employees and service providers. Its main goal is to improve the level of government and increase confidence in federal organizations. SAI employees investigate cases that relate to violations of the law that occurred only in federal organizations and institutions.

According to the annual report of the Berlin monitoring organization Transparency International, which assesses the perception of corruption in the public sector among businessmen and experts, in 2011, out of 183 countries evaluated by the Corruption Perceptions Index, the UAE received 28th place and a rating of 6 , 8 points out of 10 possible. Note that the United States is in 24th place. Qatar received the highest rating among the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council - 7.7 points and 22nd place.

The five least corrupt countries in the world include New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Singapore; the five most corrupt are North Korea, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Somalia.
